As part of your jet ski ownership, you’ll need to add some two-stroke oil quite often. But which one should you choose? That’s where I can provide some helpful advice.

Through my research, I figured out the most popular brands that many owners are using. I followed the conversation in a Facebook group recently and came up with these findings to keep your jet ski running fresh.

The most popular 2-stroke oil for a jet ski are:

1. Yamaha Yamalube Watercraft 2-Stroke Oil

The first on my list is Yamalube by Yamaha which is perfect for the Yamaha owners among us. You can buy this in bulk if you’re wanting to not just save a few dollars, but you won’t catch yourself out if one drum isn’t enough.

2. Sea-Doo PWC Synthetic Jet Ski Oil for Two Strokes

Of course, Sea-Doo has its own brand of jet ski oil. The best is their XPS series E-TEC and you’ll find it at 293600133 on Amazon. I notice it’s a little more expensive if you purchase this in smaller quantities.

3. Maxima Castor 927 2-Stroke Racing Premix Oil

If you don’t want to use the PWC oil from the 2 main manufacturers, then aim for Castor 927 which is popular as refined castor oil. It’s especially ideal for those of us who like to ride jet skis in salt water as its corrosion and rust protection properties are simply excellent. Not only this, but it’s biodegradable meaning it isn’t harmful for those of us who ride through sensitive environments.

4. Valvoline 2-Cycle Marine Motor Oil

Another great option to consider is Valvoline oil for outboard engines. This certainly isn’t my first choice as it’s really designed for outboards and other 2-stroke engines but if that’s all you have available, then you can get by for now with this.

5. Lucas Oil Semi-Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil

If you’re on the search for semi-synthetic oil for your personal watercraft, then Lucas makes a great choice. Before you buy this one, I’d be checking your particular make/model with your local dealership as it’s not compatible with all engines out there.

6. Quicksilver Premium 2-Stroke Engine Oil for PWCs

The last on my list of recommendations actually happens to be one of the best all-rounder brands around. This is perfect for Yamaha, Sea-Doo and Kawasaki jet skis to reduce corrosion and promote longevity. Perfect if you also have a boat, a dirt bike and other machines that need 2-stroke oil. It’s priced higher but the quality is reflective of this.

Going Forward

There you have it! I highly recommend going with the oil created by the same manufacturer for your jet ski. It just makes perfect sense and you’re only paying marginally more.

There is 4-stroke jet ski oil on older models but 2-stroke is significantly more popular in recent years.

When you’re out there riding at anything more than 40-knots, I’d highly recommend sunglasses to keep the glare and salt at bay. Let’s not forget the sand flies!

All too often I see total beginners heading off to the boat ramp with no eye protection in place. It frustrates me as I know that they’ll be getting back earlier than most while feeling more exhausted.

All jokes aside, I wanted to show you what I recommend as premium eye protection for jet ski riders. The type that can stop debris, bugs and the harsh sun from damaging your pupils and ensuring that you arrive safely back to the boat ramp.

Let’s start this off now. The most popular eye protection devices for jet ski owners are:

1. Hurricane Category-5 Jet Ski Floating Goggles

I’ve met a few guys at the boat ramp who have been sporting the Hurricane Category-5 Goggles who are quite happy with their performance. But what’s even better is the price with most people purchase 2 to 3 of the same or different colors just in case. These are padded and you can get a neck strap but from what I hear, they don’t fall off that easily.

2. Ergodyne Skullerz Loki Convertible Polarized Safety Sunglasses

I spotted someone wearing a set of these sunglasses the other day and was impressed! They are designed for work in heavy-duty environments which means they are ideal for protecting your eyes when riding a jet ski. The best part is that there are so many colors in stock and the strap stops these from falling off. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something that allows your face to breathe and look super cool as well!

3. Birdz Polarized Glasses For Jetskiiing

I really like this set as they have a high-quality strap that comes with the purchase. Better yet – the strap is quite wide so it doesn’t slip down when you’re riding over heavy seas or cornering hard to avoid that newbie who isn’t looking…or that buoy that popped out of nowhere! Being polarized, they’ll also help handle the sun in the early morning and late afternoon, as well as the midday glare on glassy waterways.

4. ToolFreak Spoggles, Safety Glasses and Protective Goggles

This is another set of Goggles that has drawn its inspiration towards protecting workers and it’s certainly one that can be used in watersports. Some cyclists use these to help them deal with glare while also stopping any slippage. The slippage is the last thing you want at 60-knots. I’m quite surprised by just how affordable these are as well.

5. Wildhorn Roca Snowboard & Ski Goggles

Now I would expect some people to laugh at the notion of using a pair of ski goggles for personal watercraft, but it’s definitely something I’d recommend especially if you’re someone like me who burns easily or doesn’t want to have any gaps. If you’re wearing a helmet then these goggles also fit quite well. Given these are designed for the snow, they do an excellent job of removing the glare so you can be safer around other watercraft.

6. Birdz Seahawk Unpadded Polarised Sunglasses

I really like my glasses to be padded as it creates a seal between my face and the glass, but I understand that some guys want to either have no padding or at the very least, have less padding. This is why this model rocks as the padding is minimal (mostly around the bridge of the nose) while the viewing area itself is quite large. This means that you’ll feel less like you’re always catching the view of the frame, as you might feel with the other styles.

7. Motorcycle Helmet Riding Goggles Glasses With Removable Face Mask

When riding in winter, I find that my nose runs like crazy so I grab one of these goggles to sort out that problem. Sure – I look like a futuristic protestor-slayer, but I’m out there enjoying the waterways and feeling just as good on the inside while 95% of other riders are at home in front of the fire.

In Conclusion

So I’ve shown you now my best-recommended goggles that will make your life significantly easier while riding a jet ski, but it’s also wise to consider buying 2 to 3 types. This way you can gauge the differences since some of the models work better in sunny days compared to overcast days, and vice versa.

Best Tracking Devices for Personal Watercraft

I’ve done the research to compile a list of some great options to help protect your pride and joy. After all, there’s nothing worse than hearing the news that your weekend toy has been stolen and is in the hands of those less honest. The police are often unable to do anything, but with a well-disguised tracker, you might significantly increase the chances of a swift recovery.

You just never know when the bad guys can strike. I recommend the following tracking devices:

1. AMERICALOC GL300 GPS Tracker MXW

If you need a GPS tracker that you can not just use for your jet ski but across a range of vehicles (your car and boat for instance) then look no further. This device alerts you even the moment your jet ski is moved, so even if it’s being pushed out of your garage you’ll certainly know about it.

2. Brickhouse Security Spark Nano 7

This is a popular alternative to the Americaloc and it’s also one of the smallest GPS trackers on the market. It’s on 4G which means you’ll have much more coverage across North America and into Canada. The case is magnetic so you can store it somewhere in your engine bay though I’d be wanting to add some duct tape to stop it falling off, and to also hide it more discreetly.

3. Hidden Magnetic GPS Tracker

This is another great model that pairs with your smart phone to track your GPS or any type of marine vessel. Installation is super easy and it takes just 10 seconds. Note: You’ll need to pay for a monthly plan but you can setup a range of devices for the same price, meaning you can track your motorcycle car, boat and even some of larger tools such as a lawnmower.

4. Amcrest 4G LTE GPS Tracker

This is a marine specific model which is the cheapest on this list. I prefer the other options listed above but this one is compact and has a 14-day battery. One of the coolest things is that you can use it to track others such as kids and dogs who are left back at the boat ramp. I’ve even seen some guys use this to track their jet ski trailer in case it gets stolen while they’re away.

Getting Started

Protecting your jet ski with a tracker is one element of the equation. Personally, a traditional security lock on your ski is certainly much better as a deterrent. Thieves don’t like hard work and are looking for quick and easy wins.

In the back of their minds, they now treat every jet ski as being tracked. This is why hiding in a secret spot is necessary. The front locker is one of the worst spots to hide a tracker and the engine bay isn’t that much better, but it’ll do in most cases.

Now, there are also models out there on the market which can remotely kill the power to the PWC in the event that your machine is stolen while it’s parked at the dock or beach. There is quite an additional cost with this and I haven’t yet gone down this route previously.

Hopefully, you’ll never actually have to rely on a tracker to recover your jet ski because it doesn’t get stolen in the first place. Use some common sense but use one as a last resort which can reduce insurance premiums since you may not need to make a claim on your policy.

When you’re heading out there on a jet ski fishing adventure, the last thing you’ll want is to wish you had something that you don’t have. Worst still – to see another rider out there with *that* thing that you really wish you had, yet are afraid to ask about.

Best Accessories for Jet Ski Fishing

If you’re just getting started with fishing from your PWC, then we recommend that you bookmark this page and share it with others. You know, some say that sharing this guide increases your chance of hooking a 100-pound monster by 27.6%. 😉

Anyway, here are 12 fishing items that you can get fitted to your jet ski:

1. Rod and Cooler Holders

Yep, the #1 most crucial thing that you’ll need out there is some rod and cooler holders. The type that is custom-made to your jet ski model.

You’ll find these on Amazon but most commonly you’ll find local boilermakers or hobbyists making these. Check the local riding Facebook groups to see who’s able to make one up for you.

Generally speaking, you can expect 3 to 4 rocket launchers plus a large opening to store your cooler of choice. It’s best to know which cooler you’ll want to use first as the frames are really built around the cooler itself.

2. Front Fishing Tower

In addition to having a rear-mounted fishing tower, you can get one fitted on the front too. These are custom-made in most cases and less popular since they can void your warranty and might cause insurance dramas.

Why get one? There are times when having too many rods at the rear might get frustrating as you’re crossing over lines. I like to have one rod slotted into the port side and another on the starboard side, with 2 lines running off the rear. That means that I’m pretty well covered.

The only pain comes when trying to clean my jet ski at the end of the day but it’s something I’m willing to live with.

3. Additional Fuel Cans

Chances are that you’re going to want to go the distance and that’s where taking some additional fuel is necessary. When you’re trolling all day then you’ll be surprised by how much fuel you’ll actually consume.

Later on this list is an idea for an electric trolling motor, but if you don’t intend to get this then you’ll benefit with some additional fuel cans. This is assuming you’ve got a performance-oritentated jet ski like a GTR230. Something like the GTI130 won’t really need auxillary fuel tanks since it’s very economical.

4. Coolers for Storing Fish

Obviously you’re heading out there because you’re going to want to catch a prize! Most of us fish to eat so you’ll want somewhere to store your catch….and certainly one that’s big enough.

I’ve seen too many jet ski fisherman buy a cooler that’s simply too small for the job. Go for the largest you can and buy the cooler first before you get the mount made up.

There are two types of coolers. Those that are cheap and those that are expensive. The expensive type is designed to keep your fish (or whatever else you store in it) cold with ice for days when out camping. Given that you’ll be back at the ramp before sunset in most cases, the cheaper varieties will suit you just fine.

5. Fishfinders / GPS

Yep, you’re going to want to get a fish finder and GPS combo. This is not just to help you find where they’re biting, but also to help you get home safely afterwards.

My weapon of choice is the Garmin Striker Plus 4 with Transducer. It’s quite affordable compared to some of the mainstream marine GPS units that I’ve come across over the years, and it’s quite reliable too with strong ratings/reviews online.

The tricky part is finding a spot to mount it. When riding, I keep it strapped to my wrist then strap it to the rear rod holders once the lines are in the water. Works for me.

6. Jet Ski to Boat Converter

Have you seen those crazy contraptions that have come out these last few years? I initially laughed when I started seeing them pop up at the boat ramp but now I’m impressed. The wonders of technology…

These converts can either be inflatable or fiberglass. Both have their pros and cons but overall they do massively increase the otherwise limited real estate on the rear of any modern-day jet ski, even if it’s a 3-seater.

Now I don’t use one myself but my advice is to talk to those to use them already. They’ll let you know if they’re worth it or a decision to retreat. Often you’ll see these come up for sale on Craigslist/Gumtree for half their retail price if you’re seeking a bargain.

7. Dry Storage Bags

I like to mount a couple of soft (yet waterproof) storage bags to the front sides of my jet ski when fishing. While yes I do have the front storage lockers, I don’t want my smelly fish hands reeking out the front lockers, so that’s where these storage bags come in handy.

They’re easy to wash and keep clean, and I store bait in them as well as lures too, or even some burley. It’s just super easy to reach forward and slide my hand inside.

8. Jet Ski Bimini / Sunshade Canopy

Some of us get severely burnt out there on a clear blue day and so installing a bimini over our jet ski makes all the difference. These don’t want allow you to either ride fast or stand up entirely, but they sure as heck make the difference between a good day and a great day.

Sadly, they’re not so popular so you’ll have to hunt to find a manufacturer. A lot of guys I know actually buy a bimini for a tinny/aluminum boat and then have it custom-fit to their jet ski. Yes, this will require some drilling and yes, you’ll probably void the warranty but that sure as heck is much better than developing skin cancer! This is something I’m looking into at the moment actually.

9. Jet Ski Rescue Board for Large Fish

Can you go big game fishing with your jet ski? You sure as heck can! It’s always been an awkward situation when you catch a large fish more than 2 feet long and can’t quite fit it in the cooler and there’s no where else to store it. Solution? Rescue board.

I’ve seen these guys do this successfully on YouTube. Finding a rescue board is relatively easy and you’ll find them used on Craigslist/Gumtree where they have previously been used in surfing competitions or local surf life saving clubs.

They are a bit expensive so you may be able to make one at home with some old life jackets. Likewise the one shown above is actually inflatable so you can keep it in the front locker or under the rear cooler and inflate only if you really need it.

10. Glove Clips

A weird one to add to this list, but worth while. I like to have a glove clip or two located on my ski. Ideally it’s best to have one at the front and one at the rear. I’ll explain…

You’ll probably be riding between multiple fishing areas in a day and you’ll switch between riding mode and fishing mode. It’s a different type of gloves for both so you’ll want to clip your gloves somewhere. This then makes this accessory one of the most underrated out there!

11. Electric Trolling Motor for Jet Ski

One thing that I’ve seen very few guys do is fit an electric trolling motor to their jet ski. By using your main engine, not only do you burn more gas than you’ll like, but you’re causing a noise disturbance which stops the fish from biting.

Now – don’t expect much in the way of speed. If anything, it’ll stop the tidal/current push and you’ll be able to hang in one area for prolonged periods of time. Mounting the battery in the shade under the cooler would be the best option, but you’ll also want to ensure it’s electrically safe too.

12. PWC Anchor

Most guys forget this, but having a jet ski anchor in the front locker is super helpful. I actually take 2 anchors with me; one for the front and one for the fear. This stops me swinging around constantly and the risk fo tangling lines.

Given the relatively affordable price of these, I’d definitely buy two of ’em . The rope doubles as a tow rope if you or someone else gets stuck out there!
